Mites
Mites are very diverse parasites, since there are more than 48,000 different species. The most commonly found are the spider mite, the red mite (also known as chicken mites because they attack birds and chickens sleeping at night) and the ear mite (also known as dog mites or cat mites because they usually attack the ears of these pets).Widely known as pests are also the harvest mites, the house dust mites, and the bed mites. Mites are amongst the most successful parasites, since they have adapted to live in various habitats, as they can feed on plants, animals (including humans), or even mould. Their small size also helps them to remain unnoticed.
Ear mites are usually found on animals, like cats, dogs, guinea pigs and ferrets. However, it is not unusual that mites can be found on people too. Whereas mites on dogs cause severe problems only in large numbers, relatively small numbers of mite bites on a human can cause irritation, which can be so intense that the person might start to suffer from more than just a few sleepless nights. They can also cause the disease known as scabies.
The house dust mite, which is very often found in human homes all over the world, is fed on flakes of shed human skin. Dust mites cause allergies and are a common cause of asthma. You can start to suspect that you may have mites if you have symptoms of an allergy, such as sneezing, itchiness, runny nose, red or watering eyes or eczema.
The treatment for these pests is carried out with the use of insecticides that kill mites. These are not normally available to the general public and are used mainly by pest controllers and farmers.
